Adventure Girl! The ongoing tale of my trials, victories, and adventures 9월 18일 Kilimanjaro - I made it!Just a quick note -- I climbed Kilimanjaro!!!!! I'll post more later (when I've had a good sleep!) but let it be known that officially I made it to Uhuru Point at 5895 meters (that's 19344 feet for my American readers) after a gruelling 9 hour climb from Barafu camp. I even have a certificate to prove it! Soon I'll post pictures and a more complete story. I know you can barely wait! Thanks to everyone for all the encouragement!
Here's the most important piccie -- the one on the top!
8월 18일 Self-proclaimed "super mutant Star Wars dork"Not me, of course :) But I just saw this video (requires Media Player) on the BBC news site. Basically this guy has created a one-man one-hour condensed version of the original Star Wars trilogy. He says he got the idea from the scene in Return of the Jedi when C3PO told all the Ewoks about their adventures so far (sadly, while I'm not a "super mutant dork" like this guy claims to be, I do know exactly which scene he's talking about -- and I bet you do to!). All I can say about this guy is "wow". 7월 31일 Climbing other mountainsClimbed Snowdon last weekend In preparation for Kili. Got to meet the team I'll be climbing with as well. They all seem lovely!
Found out I'm really sssllllooooowwwww! But the guides who climbed with us kept saying it was alright and that I should just go as slow as necessary to get to the top. Of course, they have to say that! I reckon I need to work on cardio stuff more than muscles, necessary. Gives me something to focus on at the gym for the next few weeks!
Wish me luck! 7월 12일 An incredible opportunity to serveMy church is just up the street from the Edgeware Road tube station -- one of the stations effected by the bombings. By midday on Thursday the church had already opened the church hall to provide a quite place to rest for the emergency workers. Then local businesses including Waitrose, Marks & Spencers and lots of local eating establishments donated loads and loads of food and drinks.
The staff of the church has since then been open 24 hours a day offering cups of tea and coffee, fruit, chocolate, water, and sandwiches to all the emergency crews. On Sunday before evening services, I got to spend 2 hours there myself. What an incredible opportunity to serve. The emergency workers were so thankful just to have a place to rest out of the way of the rubble, physical and emotional, at the tube station. They couldn't believe that the food and drinks were free. They couldn't believe that the people serving them were doing it out of love and thankfulness.
One of the chiefs of services and two of his colleagues came to our service that evening and shared their thanks with us. The chief told us of the hours and hours his crews had spent at the bomb site. Others in the church hall told of not enough water except for what we had for them. One officer from Croydon talked about barely being home since Thursday.
Thanks to all of the emergency crews who have worked so tirelessly since the bombings. And thanks to my church, St. Mary's of Bryanston Square, for giving me the opportunity to help, even in the smallest way. 7월 8일 The London BombingsJust a quick update for friends and family:
I'm in Amsterdam at the moment at a conference and am safe. Have only watched everything that's going on in London on the television. Thanks to everyone who has checked on me.
It really is unbelievable what's happened. I was talking to one friend about it and he said basically we knew it would happen eventually. Still, I dont' think anyone really believes it will happen. And I hope we never get use to it. 7월 2일 Live 8 and other newsSo, along with 5.5 billion other people, I'm watching the Live 8 concert (sadly, only on the telly -- no gold-circle tickets for me). Thoughts so far:
U2 and Paul McCartney singing Sargeant Pepper - brilliant
U2 - I just really respect Bono because he actually does work for this issue all the time - it isn't a publicity thing for him at all.
Coldplay - not bad
Elton John and Pete Dougherty - erm, no
Dido - fair
The Senegalese guy with Dido - grand
REM - Michael Stipe is way too weird for words
Jonathon Ross - entertaining and very yellow
Beyond all that, I have my own exciting news... I got my Darth Tater today! Got it from this great web site called I Want One Of Those. A must-visit web site!
Now I realise that putting the Darth Tater news in the same post as the Live 8 concert is probably indicative of the problem the world has in general with not paying enough attention to the concerns of the rest of the world. But I ddin't say Darth Tater was BETTER than Live 8, I just said it arrived today. So I reckon that's alright! 6월 24일 Fashion for Summer 2005Went to Wagamama (the easiest restaurant name to text - try it out!) for dinner with my friend Jo (who will be very excited to see her name here) before going to see _Mr. & Mrs. Smith_ (which turned out to be, despite reviews otherwise, quite entertaining). We were talking to our waiter Ewan (like you do) about how ridiculous it was that it was 30 degrees outside and yet we were eating hot spicy food in a basement restaurant. Conversation carried on from there and somehow wound up with THE fashion of Summer 2005. Ewan made the spot-on observation that in the future, Summer 2005 would be known for long flowing white skirts and big brown belts. We giggled with him at the veracity of that statement. Little did we know... ...that when we left the restaurant to go to the movie, in the 500 meters between the establishments, we saw at least 2 examples of THE fashion! We probably would have seen more but we were doubled over laughing at just how right dear Ewan had been :) Now, I'm not necessarily known for my fashion sense, tho I do alright (if I do say so myself), but I simply now refuse to wear THE fashion because EVERYONE is doing it. Why look like everyone else? 6월 21일 Surely you joust!Ask me what I did last Friday. C'mon, ask me! Really, you're not interested? Well I'm going to tell you anyway -- I jousted. Like on a horse, with a lance. Jousting. Very cool! My workmates and I went for a team day out to the Warwickshire country side to learn to do all sorts of medieval things with the Knights of Middle England. So flippin' cool! We started the morning getting suited up in tabards, belts and gloves. First we learned how to effectively knock the stuffing out of each other with quarter staffs. An interesting way to develop team bonds, wouldn't you say? Any latent frustrations with work-mates could have been released during this activity! Then we moved on to the horses. Some of us had a bit of riding experience and others had almost none, but that didn't seem to dampen any of the excitement. We started off just walking the horses, then learned to trot. Then we had to carry a lance! All new areas of potential embarrassment, but everyone carried themselves well. We practiced hitting quintains (targets to get used to aiming at the shield) and then picking rings off the tilt (the fence-like thing in the middle that you ride on either side of when jousting). Some people had better aim (or luck?) than others but every single one of us hit the targets and picked up at least one ring! For lunch we went to a local pub, still dressed in our tabards. A few eyebrows were raised, but in typical English fashion, nobody asked us what was going on. They just stared and then went back to their pints! After lunch we learned to fight with swords. That sound of swords meeting in a clash to the death (well, ok, to the end of the choreographed sequence) was electrifying! We then got back on the horses for the final competition. You get two points for each quintain that you solidly hit and one point for each ring you pick up. My team won! Well, officially the other team won, but only because they cheated by picking up 3 rings at a time. We all know who REALLY won! The last event of the day was actually tilting at one of the instructors -- he rode down one side of the tilt and each of us had 2 goes at attempting to knock him off his horse! I don't think he was particularly frightened of us. However, he should have been! I knocked him right off that horse! Of course, the fact that his feet weren't in his stirrups, and that he's trained as a stunt man, and that i barely touched him with my lance makes me wonder -- did he fall off on purpose? We may never know :) Anyway, a good time was had by all. But man was I sore on Sunday! Here are some piccies...enjoy! 6월 16일 Climbed Kili yesterday!Well, OK, not THE Kilimanjaro. But at the gym, the elliptical trainer thingy has a program called Kilimanjaro. Love it! Great sense of accomplishment to climb the biggest mountain in Africa in just over 25 minutes |
